No alcohol will be given to drunken guests! it says. This is mainly ignored, because drinking is the only thing you can succesfully practice here.

K.u.K. Amtshaus

Früher war das (m)eine Schule. Heute kann man sich hier im ehemaligen Musikzimmer einen neuen Reisepaß oder Führerschein ausstellen lassen.

The Austrians built this house, it was my school before. Today I can go get new passport in the office where my former music class was held.

Haus im Schatten

Im richtigen Licht erscheinen manchmal sozialistische Bausünden in einem unverhofftem Glanz. Aber nur von Außen und für einen kurzen Augenblick.

Proper light sometimes makes even the socialistic architecture sins look charming. It only works at the faccade and lasts a minute.

Ein Neues für Alte

Dieses moderne Pflegeheim für Alte wurde aus den EU-Fördermitteln errichtet. Es fügt sich architektonisch nahtlos in die Uferlandschaft ein.

The ultramodern old people's home was built with the money from the European Union. I was surpised to see how it fits to the enviroment.

Strandbad

Diese Ruine eines Strandbades direkt am Flußufer stammt noch aus K.u.K.-Zeiten. Sowie der Bahnhof, Eisenbahn und einige Bürgerhäuser.

This lido ruin directly at the river Drava was built by the Austrians, pre WW1. Just like the railroad infrastructure and some nice old tenements.

Weinstraße

Es wird hier viel zu gern getrunken. Tourismus ist vorhanden, aber stark ausbaufähig. Standard & Service sind unter dem Niveau der Landschaft.

These guides lead you to wonderfull wineyards. People love to consume their wine. Tourism exists, but standard & service are low & medium level.

Grenzgebiet

Die Grenze zu Kroatien ist nur einen Wurf entfernt. Schmuggel aller Art erfreut sich großer Beliebtheit. Es ist ein neuer Wirtschaftszweig.

The outer EU frontier to Croatia is only a hit away. Smuggling of almost anything become very popular. At least this runs prosperous for all.

National schmeckt besser!

Gut solange es um Wurst und Schnitzel geht. Leider schmeckt National allzubitter wenn es um die Rechte mancher Minderheiten hier geht.

O Tannenbaum!

Heute gibt es einen Krieg zwischen dem Bürgemeister und den Betreibern eines Jugendclubs im Keller des Schloßes. Ausgang ist noch ungewiss.

It's a fight between the smalltown' major and popular underground youth club carriers. Both club & major's offices are located in this old castle.

Granate

Die Legende vom Schloßturm besagt, dieser habe im Krieg eine Granate abgekriegt und somit die Stadtbewohner davor gerettet. Im Jahre 1991.

The legend tells the casle tower has catched a shell during the last war, thus saving many lives of the residents. This was in the year of 1991.

Altbau

Hinten das topsanierte Schloß (Gemeinderats- und Amtssitz), vorne ein heruntergekommener historischer Zweckbau. Das Dach ist neu, immerhin.

Behind the top renovated castle (seat of power!) I have discovered this interesting historic functional building. After all the roof is done fresh.

Parkplatz

Nissan's neuestes 4x4 Modell. Aber scheinbar kein Geld mehr für einen befestigten Zugang. Hoffentlich hat's für passendes Schuhwerk gereicht.

One of Nissan' latest SUV models. Seems like this kind of vehicle is really needed to get to the house. I hope the owner has got good shoes.

West & Boss

Zigarettenmarken geben den Ton an. Aber das Ambiente der Kneipe scheint aus einer völlig anderen Zeit. Der Zwiespalt des ganzen Landes.

Cigarettes brands are telling the story. The rest of this pub' scenery doesn't seem to have managed the shift. This transition will take longer.

Im Herzen

Das Innere der realsozialistisch anmutenden Kneipe, die zum Kaufhaus gehört. Hier ist das wahre Zentrum dieses Ortes. Gut zu wissen.

Inside the pub with socialistic charme, which belongs to the cooperative store. Here you are at the real heart of the smalltown. Good to know.

Die Konditorei

War berühmt für ihre Creme-Schnitten. Ist geschlossen, hat scheinbar nicht den Anschluß an die Wechselstuben-Multifunktions-Shops geschafft.

My favorite cake shop didn't survive the turnaround. Probaby wasn't flexible enough to compete the multifunc-moneychange-shops.

Im Hinterhof

Auf dem alten Putz kann man den Schatten von einem schnittigem neuen PKW sehen. Das übliche Bild, hier weniger plakativ und mehr abstrakt.

You may guess what the shadowshape on the old wall represents. I think old walls looks better without fancy cars standing in front of them.

Haus im Zentrum

Im alten Kern. Oft sieht man das die Prioritäten beim flotten Gefährt liegen anstatt bei (überfälliger) Haussanierung. Solange es nur nicht rein regnet.

A common thing to see that mobility is a priority among the urgently needed remediation work. As long as the rain doesn't come through.

Mittelalterlicher Kern

Der verfällt und wird sukzessive abgerissen. Hier die Rückseite eines Hauses an der Hauptstraße. Leider kann oder will man nichts dagegen tun.

The smalltown centre is really old. Here the backyard of a main street house. Seems like nobody can do anything to stop the desolation.

Treppe zum Sportplatz

Diese verbindet den kleinen (alten) Sportplatz mit dem großen Neuem. Der war anscheinend nicht groß genug, denn es gibt noch ein Stadion.

This stairs connect the old sportsfield with the new. The new one probably wasn't big enough, because there is even one more, the stadium.

Gang Bros

Die Jugendlichen kleiden sich nach U.S.-Gang-Vorbildern. Aber in Wirklichkeit sind die hier alle ganz brave Jungs und Nichtraucher.

Although they want to appear like sorts of gang members, it's just the wear. These are good boys and even nonsmokers (no fire to offer).

Bunte Balkons

Sie können leider nicht über den tristen Bau hinwegtäuschen. Dies ist möglicherweise das traurigste Wohnhaus in der gesamten Kleinstadt.

Pick'n'mix balcony arrangement cannot really change the moods. Probably one of the saddest socialist buildings from the whole smalltown.

Die Kirche

Diese war schon immer da. Neuerdings erfreut der Klerus sich an zunehmenden Zulauf und neuer Macht. Früher war das natürlich anders.

The church is here to stay. In the nowdays the cleric are hapily getting increased popularity and political power. This is something new.

Fontäne

Eine von zwei Fontänen der Stadt die uns die Neuzeit bescherte. Diese sind nicht unbedingt das Schlimmste von dem was uns die Wende brachte.

One out of two fountains the time after the turning point brought us. These are not necessarily the worst things from the postcommunism era.

Plattenbau

Wohnungsbau in den 50ern war eher zweckmäßig. Diese Wohnungen sind verhältnismäßig groß und komfortabel. Trotzdem will sie jetzt keiner.

These appartments were built in the 50ties, they are quite comfortable and relatively large. But nobody wants to have them today. I wonder why?

Alte Apotheke

In dem Haus war mal früher die Apotheke, neulich wurde restituiert d.h. an die ursprünglichen Besitzer zurückgegeben. Es verfällt jetzt langsam.

This house used to be a pharmacy before the restitution. Initial owner probably doesn't have the money, because it gets desolated overmore.

Nach der Show sind Performer sowie Publikum, technisches Personal sowie Touristen (ich!) und auch die örtlichen Berichterstatter mehr als zufrieden.

After the show everybody is happy. The audience, tech staff & the occasional tourist (me!), the local press is happy with splendid material.

In der Pause wurde außerdem guter heimischer Wein ausgeschenkt. Das tat der Stimmung einen ordentlichen Schwenk in die richtige Richtung.

During the intermission audience got a free glas of a local high quality wine. This was obviously kicking the moods into the right direction.

In der Pause gibt die Mädchentruppe des städtischen Gymnasiums eine heftige Tanzeinlage. Nachher gibts die kleinen Majorettes (Kindergruppe).

In the intermission we are surprised by the eye catching performance of the highschool' dancers. After them we see Majorettes (small children).

Die Freizeit-Professionisten von der Tontechnik haben alle Hände voll zu tun. Es wird natürlich ein hochwertiger Live-Mitschnitt aufgezeichnet.

Hobby technicians are giving their best. They are trying to get the best possible setup for the live recording they make. Acoustic is very bad.

Das Lokalfernsehn ist mit mehreren Kameras dabei, der Ortsfotograf hat Stress. Die Stimmung ist sehr beschwingt als die ersten Takte ertönen.

This is a highlight for the local TV station and the local photographer is also highly engaged. The mood ist exhilirating as the concert begins.

Der Bürgemeister hält eine lange Rede. Sichtlich wird auf der Kulisse dem EU-Beitritt gefröhnt. Das Konzertprogramm ist ambitioniert, wie immer.

Major's speech is long and tiresome. Scenery reflects the accedence to the European Union. The concert programme itself is ambitious as every year.

Als Advent-Highlight findet das alljährliche Konzert der städtischen Blaskapelle statt. Die Spannung beim Eingang in die Turnhalle ist groß.

The tension gets higher & higher whilst waiting to enter the sports centre. We will soon wintness the annual concert of the local brass-band.

Bibliothek

Im alten Schloß sind Standesamt, Stadtverwaltung, Bürgemeister, Musikschule, Jugendclub sowie eine schöne Bibliothek untergebracht.

I love the town library which is nicely settled in the old castle. The building is multifunctional now and also represents a modern seat of power.

Durch den Park

Ein Spaziergang im Regen. Den wachsamen Augen und Ohren der Polizei entgeht kein Eichkatzerlfurz. Die fremden Elemente sind überschaubar.

Relaxin' walk through the park. Big blue (police) is watching suspiciosly. The alien elements are under control here, at the outpost of EU now.

Shopping Center

Ein neuer Gewerbepark breitet sich auf den ehemaligen Feldern des Kombinats aus. Der italienische Kaffee ist gut, der Ausblick weniger.

There is a new shopping mall growing at the former socialistic fields. Italian coffee is much better than the view through the coffeeshop window.

Die Ziegelfabrik

Die Fabrik hat es immer schon hier gegeben. Dieses Gebäude ist neu und der Firmenname auch. Die neuen Herren haben investiert und expandiert.

The bricks factory has allways been there. This building is new as the brandname also is. The new owners have invested & expanded.

Kerencicev Trg / Hauptplatz

Besonders klein sind die Kleinstädte an regnerischen Feiertagen. Es ist verträumt und romantisch (unscharf), so paßt es besser zur Adventzeit.

Smalltown appear extra small on rainy days. My first picture looks dreamy and romantic (just out of focus), so it fits the christmass moods better.
